Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: on Friday, 5 Nov 1915, at Eastern Twp., Quebec, Canada. William Scroggie 117th Eastern Townships Battalion (C.E.F.)
On November 5, 1915, orders were finally received authorizing the organization of the 117th Eastern Townships Battalion, C.E.F. effective December 1st. Lt-Col L.J. Gilbert, V.D., was appointed its first Commanding Officer. 893 volunteers were enlisted and of the six most senior officers, all but one had the rank of Lt-Col in the Canadian Militia. 23 of the new officers were from units in the Eastern Townships: 11 from the 53rd Sherbrooke Regiment; 3 from the XI Hussars; and 9 from the 7th Hussars. The Eastern Townships Board of Trade presented the unit with its new Colours.
Initially, the Battalion was designated as a mounted unit, but was changed to infantry in 1916. During the nine months of training which followed, the unit was billeted in the towns of Richmond, Danville, Bury, Coaticook and Sherbrooke. In may 1916, the unit moved to Camp Valcartier, north of Quebec City, for final preparations. On August 12th, the unit left by train for Halifax where it embarked on the "Empress of Britain", arriving in England on August 24th, 1916.
In the ensuing months, the unit conducted training in battalion drill, musketry and bayonet fighting. With losses in France increasing at an alarming rate, a decision was made to disband those battalion waiting in England as reinforcements. The officers and men of the Battalion were parceled out as replacements in other line units: 134 to the 148th Battalion at Bramshott , 95 to the 150th French-Canadian Battalion at Witley, and 165 to the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. Early in December 1916, having failed to received new drafts from Canada, the unit ceased to retain its separate identity and was disbanded.
For the balance of the war, members of the Battalion fought with distinction as reinforcements of: the 14th Battalion (Royal Montreal Regiment); the 24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles); the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles; and the 87th Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards).
Prior to being disbanded, the unit had provided the guard at Buckingham Palace. The Colours of the 117 th Eastern Townships Battalion were originally deposited in Westminister Abbey, but were subsequently returned to Canada where they were deposited in St Peter's Church. Total fatal battle casualties numbered 147 or 16.5% of the total Battalion strength, with another 351 being wounded..2

Anecdote Anecdote: William Scroggie was present circa Aug 1893, when George Catto Scroggie Family history as related by Heather McTavish Taylor: (after the death of his wife, Myra Alice) George Sr. took up with another woman, a school marm, and she wanted nothing to do with the children. No records have been found to this affect so if there was something printed about it, it will help us know the story. I am surprised that this would have happened so quickly after their mother’s death but I am guessing that George Sr. would have had no ability to care for the children. If only 3 of the 4 went to the orphanage, I would guess that the eldest, Alice, may have not gone and been sent to “work”. I believe it was she that corresponded with the family in Scotland so perhaps she “rescued” her siblings.
