Obituary & Burial

  • An Obituary for Burke Edward Prince appeared on Saturday, 14 Jan 2006, in The Stockton Record, Stockton, California. Man who helped build 87 water towers dies

Manteca — Eighty-seven steel balloons dot the United States; they are push pins marking the life of Burke E. Prince.

The Manteca man, who had a hand in erecting more than one water tower for each of the years he lived, died last Tuesday of a heart attack at home. He was 83.

Burke E. Prince II of Stockton said his father helped build more water towers than anyone else west of the Rocky Mountains. He built them up and down the Central Valley, said the elder Prince’s wife, Barbara. There’s the one in Manteca, one in Stockton, another in Madera, and others in Seattle, Utah and Idaho.

Most of them went up during the elder Prince’s time with Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Co.

For more than 40 years, Prince worked in steel construction, supervising projects such as the building of the now-defunct Rancho Seco nuclear power plant, sections of the Alaskan oil pipeline and portions of dams, his family said.

He also oversaw construction of wind-driven and other kinds of power plants on the West Coast and in Hawaii.

“That was his life,” his wife said. “He didn’t feel like it was work. He was always telling me what he did here and there.”

John Baca, 84, of Galt, who grew up with Prince and joined him in the steel-construction industry, said: “We thought it was great building water towers. At that time, they were especially needed, because that was the only way to get water pressure.”

When Prince wasn’t watching over crews assembling steel walls, he was hovering over the steel strings of a guitar.

He enjoyed playing bluegrass music and performing with a band, his family said.

“I’m surrounded by his music here at home, with six guitars and two violins,” his wife said.

Other survivors include another son, Michael J. Prince of Stockton; two sisters, Winnona Elliott and Mary Lee Filippone, both of Arizona; a granddaughter, Whisper L. Gray of Manteca; and three great-grandchildren.

Park View Funeral Home in Manteca is handling services. Interment will be Wednesday at Park View Cemetery.
