Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Ephraim Cantrell Ephraim Cantrell was born in 1792 in The Spartanburg District of South Carolina. When he was quite young his family moved to Warren County, Tennessee . He first married Elizabeth (last name not known) in Tennessee . When he was about 35 years old he moved his family to Graves County Kentucky where in 1830 he and his wife were recorded along with six children , two girls 10-15 , one boy 5-10 , one girl 5-10 and two boys under 5 years of age .
Ephraim moved his family from Graves County , Kentucky to Scott County , Missouri before 1840 when Elizabeth was listed as head of household of six children . It is likely that Elizabeth died or she and Ephraim divorced before 16 March 1848 when Ephraim married Mrs. Martha Daven in Scott County . Mrs Daven was born in Georgia in 1824 and was the mother of one son , James A. Daven born in 1846 in Illinois .
In 1850 Ephraim was recorded in Pulaski County , Illinois where his household included a one year old son born to him and Martha and three sons by his first marriage . Two more of his sons lived in the same community .
Ephraim was not found in later census records but three of his sons settled in Pulaski County and raised their families there ..1

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Richard C. Cantrell Jr. Richard C. Cantrell (5) was born in 1807, about the time Warren County, Tennessee was formed from White County , Tennessee . He grew up there and married Talitha Cantrell , a first cousin once removed , about 1828 in Warren County . Talitha was born in 1809 in Spartanburg Co.,South Carolina , the daughter of Abraham Cantrell (5) and Sarah Durham . Abraham and Sarah Durham Cantrell and family arrived in Warren County between 1814 and late 1815 when Talitha was about 5 or 6 years old . They were former members of the Buck Creek Baptist Church in Spartanburg County and joined the Old Bildad Church in Warren County , Tennessee by letter in late 1815 , presumably from the Buck Creek Church that had been established by Richard's Grandfather , Isaac Cantrell . In about 1830 Richard moved his family , now Talitha and one daughter , West to Weakley County , Tennessee . By 1840 the family had increased to five . In 1845 , Talitha's father died , intestate , in Dekalb County Tennessee and she was mentioned in the court proceedings . Her older brother , John Cantrell , was administrator of her father's will , but died in 1846 before Abraham's estate was settled . Talitha's next older brother , Joseph W. Cantrell was appointed to assume settlement of Abraham's estate and was awarded custody of three minor half siblings .
In 1860 Richard and Talitha were recorded in the 9th. District of Weakley County , Tennessee near Locust Grove . Richard had earlier been a brick mason (as was his ancestor Richard (1) ) , but by 1870 he was farming in the 15th. District of Weakley County Near Dresden , Tennessee and had real estate valued at $ 1600.00 and personal property worth $ 600.00 . The dates of death nor burial place could not be located for Richard or Talitha .
They had nine children who still have descendants in West Tennessee ..1
