  • An Obituary for Martha Dew Cantrell appeared on Thursday, 6 May 1948, in The Limestone Democrat, Athens, Alabama. Mrs. Martha Dew Cantrell Spence

    Mrs. Martha Dew Cantrell Spence died May 1, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Thomas W. Pettus, at Veto, after a long illness.

    W. B. Spence, her husband, died at his home on January 18, 1948, and since Mr. Spence's death "Miss Matt" stayed at her home with her son, Arthur L. Spence, and family who moved in with her. She had gone to visit Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Pettus and family when she was taken worse and Saturday morning she was thought to be better.

    Mr. and Mrs. Spence were married 52 years, and to this union, nine children were born.

    The funeral was held at the Pettusville Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Bro. J. B. Martin, Bro. R. H. McDonnell of Sommerville, and Bro. Flemming Smith. Burial was made in Pettusville Cemetery.

    Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Thomas W. Pettus, Veto; four sons, Thomas M. Spence, Elkmont, William Carl Spence, Athens, Arthur Lee Spence, Veto, Charles Frank Spence, Guntersville; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson; two brothers, Clint Cantrell, Elkmont and Allie Cantrell, Ft. Worth, Texas, and a number of nieces and nephews. John C. Spence, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Grady Spence, Athens, were Mrs. Spence's brothers-in-law.

    Pallbearers were nephews, Bob and Bee Holt, Max and Noah Robison, Howard Hobbs and Coy L. Spence.

    Green Hill community resident and DeKalb County native Georgia Magnolia Adcock, 84, died March 8 at Rain Tree Manor Nursing Center after an extended illness.

    A homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late George and Bertie Cantrell Haley; and was preceded in death by her husband, Edward (I.D.) Adcock; and brother, Roy E. Haley.

    She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Bernard Siler of Lake Worth, Fla., Deanna and Charles Eddie Kirby of Smithville; sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Michelle Adcock of Bridgewater, N.J., Garry Lynn and Peggy Adcock, Mickey and Joyce Adcock, all of McMinnville; sister and brother-in-law, Alda and C.N. Womack of McMinnville; brother, Paul Haley of Smithville; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

    Services were held Monday at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Vinson officiating. Burial followed at DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

    McMinnville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
