Primary Birth & Death

Obituary & Burial

  • An Obituary for LaVerne Kenneth Twiss appeared on Tuesday, 14 Dec 1993, in The Tacoma News Tribune, Tacoma, Washington. Tacoma's Ken Twiss Was Crooner Crosby's Biggest, Best Fan

He was Bing Crosby's biggest fan.

He preserved the legacy when it seemed everyone had forgotten Bing Crosby except for precious December moments when "White Christmas" was played around the world. He was a man who wanted the world to remember that Harry Lillis Crosby was born in 1904 on North J Street in Tacoma.

Ken Twiss - founder, president and eternal protector of the Bing Crosby Society - died in Tacoma last week after a long illness. He was 82.

And yet, Twiss was a child when it came to Bing Crosby. When the society had a snappy little museum in the Commerce Street level of the Pantages Theater, Twiss happily presided over a shrine of Bing pins, Bing neckties, Bing sheet music, Bing belt buckles, Bing wristwatches, a can of Bing beer brewed in Folkestone, England, a BING C license plate from New York state, a table made in 1876 by Bing's grandfather and unused wax cartons meant to hold ice cream marketed in the shimmering name of Bing Crosby.

Twiss discovered a lode of cartons in an antique shop on Broadway. The flavor, naturally, was vanilla. An unused carton cost $3, the only memorabilia for sale at the gallery.

Twiss was a Cleveland, Okla., native who moved to Tumwater in 1913, graduated from Puyallup High School in 1931 and became a Bing buff during the Depression.
Twiss accumulated more than 900 Bing 78s, which he donated to the Tacoma Public Library when he became a cook on the submarine USS Intimidator during World War II. While stationed at San Diego's Naval Training Center, Twiss regularly zipped up to Sunset and Vine in Hollywood and sat in the audience of Crosby's weekly radio show on CBS. A CBS producer named Bill Morrow introduced Bing to his biggest fan.
"He was a very easy person to know," Twiss said in 1989, "but I didn't want to bother him, so I stayed at a respectful distance."

A respectful distance was kept when Twiss regularly saw Crosby in the 1950s. Twiss was an executive chef with Pan American Airlines and lived in Burlingame, Calif. He used to see Bing and Kathryn Crosby walking in their hometown of Hillsborough, Calif.
"I would wave to him, and he would wave back," Twiss said, "but I didn't want to bother him."

Twiss moved to Tacoma and became chef at Johnny's Dock and Busch's Round Table. He listened to Bing Crosby records every day. He formed the Bing Crosby Historical Society in 1977, soon after Crosby died.
For 15 years, Twiss was a gang of one, remembering Crosby's sighing songs. "Just One Word of Consolation" was his favorite. It always made Twiss cry.

Twiss cried when he had to close the little gallery below the Pantages. Earlier this year, he signed papers to dissolve the society. It once had 350 members worldwide.
When Ken Twiss died, it was easy to imagine a snowy scene in heaven. Bing waves and asks Ken to come over on his side of the street. Bing Crosby sings "White Christmas" in a crooning voice only Ken can hear.
