Marriagecirca 1825, Justice and Phebe Ecker, daughter of: Cornelius Ecker and Nancy (?), were married at New YorkG.2,3

Children of: Justice Gifford and Phebe Ecker

Memorable Moments & Stories

  • Other: Justice Gifford The 1830 census of Nunda, Allegany Co., N.Y. shows Justin Gifford, aged 20-30, with a wife and three sons under five years of age.

The 1850 census of Nunda, Livingston Co., N.Y. shows a Daniel Gifford, aged 21, farmer, living in the household of Joseph and Harriet Russell, both of whom were from New Hampshire. William Gifford, aged 20, laborer, was living with James Barrett (Barit), aged 63, from New Hampshire. Also shown was Mariah Gifford, aged 19, in the home of Zadock and Sarah (Mather) Herick. Zadock was from Vermont and his wife was born in New York.

It is likely that these three children belong to the family of Justice Gifford. What became of the other child of the 1830 census?

A letter from Wm. H. Gifford, dated 22 Oct 1851 at Mt. Morris to Hiram Gifford at Deerlick, Williams County, Ohio, states that "Daniel was here last Sunday" with instructions about sending a partial payment on a note.

References to this family are found in Hand's Nunda on pages 146, 181, and 376. On page 181 Justice is given in error as Jasper. On page 146 is a sketch on the Acker family. Cornelius Acker, Sr., settled in Nunda in 1818 and died soon after. His widow Nancy married Arba Town who married (2nd), late in life, Eliza Acker. Descendants of Phebe Acker and .... Wetherby are given: Edwin Wetherby had Delina Wetherby who married Charles Maker, son of Rev. Archelaus Maker..2
  • Anecdote: circa Jan 1833, at Nunda, Livingston County, New YorkG, Justice Gifford and Phebe Ecker Lodomillo Twp. -- William Gifford, son of Justice and Phebe (Ecker) Gifford, of New York, was born in Nunda, Livingston County, N.Y., Nov. 13, 1829. His father died when he was about four years old, and his mother afterward married George Weatherly. Prior to his death Justice Gifford gave William to his sister, Mrs. Lydia Easton, with whom he remained, attending school and assisting on the farm, until he was nineteen years old. He then worked on a farm at $10 a month for six months, saving $50, with which he went to Oswego County, N.Y., and attended school one winter, then returned to his home in Livingston County. He was married in Wyoming County, to Jane Kingsley, Oct. 27, 1855. She was born in Perry, N.Y. Four children were born of this union--Martha (wife of Henry Mimkin), Victor E., Eva (wife of Lorreston Easton) and Justice K. After his marriage Mr. Gifford went to Dodge County, Wis., in 1855, thence to Edgewood, Delaware County, Ia., in 1857, and remained there until the spring of 1865, and from there to Michigan, Macon City, Mo., and Pierce County, Wis; at the last
place he engaged in farming till he settled in Clayton County, Ia., in 1873. He purchased a farm of sixty acres on section 19, Lodomillo Township, which he still owns and resides upon. Mr. Gifford lost his first wife, Dec. 1, 1880, and he was again married on Oct. 27, 1881, to Hellen M. Woodworth, who was born in Pike, Wyoming County, N.Y., and was a daughter of Leonard Woodworth and Almaretta, nee Stuart. Mr. Gifford has held various local offices of trust, and in politics was a Democrat, but is now Republican. History of Clayton County, Iowa, 1882, p.889-890
Others were: William H. Gifford, Peter Easton and Lydia A. Gifford.4

ActivityDetails
Anecdote Anecdote: William H. Gifford was present circa Jan 1833, at Nunda, Livingston County, New YorkG, when Justice Gifford and Phebe Ecker Lodomillo Twp.
Others were: Peter Easton and Lydia A. Gifford.3
